Submission: Interlude
Title: Interlude
Team: Draco
Rating/Warnings: G
Wordcount: 498
Prompt: Fight!Fight!Fight!
Disclaimer: Not mine.

Draco ran through the castle on the heels of the Death Eaters, terrified. He didn’t want to be here – he was a boy of words, not a man of action. But his companions would not allow a single moment of weakness, so he persevered, only his large grey eyes showing the horror that reigned inside.

“Split up!” Bellatrix yelled, her voice strong, delighting in the carnage they were causing to the school they had invaded. Draco obeyed instinctively, following another Death Eater down a corridor, hoping to find an unguarded exit where he could make a quick escape.

But he wasn’t going to be let off so easy. “Stupefy,” roared an altogether too familiar voice as they turned the corner, and only his instinctive leap to the side saved him.

Ron wasn’t so lucky however, and the retaliating spell that the Death Eater – Nott, it was Nott, he recognized him now – sent his way slammed him back against the wall, stunning him. Nott laughed.

“A Weasley brat,” he chuckled, enjoying this as much as Bellatrix was. “Oh, I would love to be there when they show Arthur your body,” he purred, eyes gleaming as he lifted his wand. Draco watched in horror – no, this could not be happening. Instinctively, he reacted.

“Protego!” he screamed, and Nott’s curse rebounded, crashing into a wall instead of the red head.

“Draco! What…?” Nott yelled, whipping around in fury, but Draco was moving automatically. He fired off spells at the Death Eater, who grimly retaliated with deadlier curses. It was only luck which saved Draco, and he knew it was running out. Sooner or later Nott was going to hit him and then…

“Stupefy!” Ron yelled again, and Nott paid for forgetting about the red head – the curse hit him squarely in the chest and he flew backwards, hitting his head with a sickening crunch, landing in an awkward position. Draco stared down at him, shaking. He had to get away – no one would know Nott had died because of him.

Ron grabbed his arm in an iron grip as he turned to flee again. “Let me go!” Draco said, his voice unnaturally high.

“You saved my life.” Ron sounded confused, grateful, and wary at the same time. The blond paused for a second.

“I…” Words that had been held back for years flooded to his lips, and then faded away. Draco lifted a hand, and touched Ron’s cheek gently with his fingertips. The moment stretched on, as it etched itself indelibly into his memory, Ron’s rough breathing, his soft skin, the wonder in his eyes as he stared at the blond, uncomprehendingly.

And then an explosion tore through the castle and the spell was broken. Draco tore himself from the now slackened grip and fled, dread in his heart. It was too late to turn back now. He had chosen his path, and now he had to follow it.

Even if it led him down into the pits of despair.

Absolutely loved it! Draco's inner turmoil is brilliantly written. Also, it's very intense for a drabble!
